Throwing the ball in the Park

The PICU remains busy, Covid has changed disease timing.  We are still seeing winter viruses now in the Spring.  Took a little time afterwards to play ball with PIPPA.  She is small in size but likes the full size tennis ball.  Just plain happy.  Always good to get out and play, now if I could just teach her to bring the ball back every time.  Most of the time, she teaches me to fetch.  Oh well.

Bolt made an appearance as well, he seems to return the ball.  He will play with only one ball and no others.  It has to be broken in the middle and I keep a close eye on this one.

Roses are blooming

Roses are blooming

It is now June.  The roses in the front yard are blooming early and look great.  I think the extra sun and really shifted the blooms into high gear.  The last year has been filled with unexpected events however one thing is for certain, roses will bloom, the fragrance is amazing and the colors will bring smiles to everyone.

COVID-19 Vaccination Day

When the medical director of my unit called me two days ago to tell me I could schedule my COVID-19 vaccine, I hung up the phone and cried. While I am fortunate to not have witnessed the overwhelming horrors my adult colleagues have, we in pediatrics are certainly no strangers to the daily suffering that COVID-19 has brought to the healthcare environment: learning to recognize and aggressively treat a new pediatric inflammatory illness (MIS-C), treating adult patients for the first time in many years, and filling our beds with the tragic secondary epidemic of adolescents reaching their breaking point with anxiety and depression.  At home,I anxiously refresh the COVID tracking websites, wondering if there will be enough staff or ventilators when I report to work the next day and  worrying about my own chronically ill family members being denied a hospital bed if they were to seek care.  Today, my anxiety lightens as I marvel at this vaccine and the hope that it breeds. While there are many skeptics who claim it is rushed or has questionable safety, I proudly rolled down my sleeve without hesitancy for a vaccine that I know is safe and effective. How do I know? Because I, like countless of my colleagues, have been following the development of this vaccine from day one. We have read all the papers, scoured all the data, read countless opinion pieces and listened to innumerable interviews from respected experts in the field. The healthcare community has overwhelmingly endorsed this vaccine not just with words, but with their actions as hundreds of thousands of healthcare workers line up to receive this vaccine over the coming days and weeks.   This vaccine is not rushed. It is a stunning show of what can happen when the forces of science and industry combine and bureaucratic roadblocks are lifted. It is human ingenuity and perseverance distilled into a tiny 5ml bottle.  I hope that when the time comes to roll up your sleeve, that you do so to protect yourself, your family, and your fellow citizens.

End of November

It is now the end of November and closer to Christmas and even closer to the end of 2020.  It has been an incredible year, full of twists and turns.  We all know the challenges thus as I spend the day in the intensive care unit, I walked out to the garden.  Kudos to all those individuals who keep this area special right in the middle of a major hospital.

Corona Virus Updates

Please be safe out there.  Please wear a mask and following social distancing recommendations.  With the sheltering at home, I am sewing a few masks (1.5 hours a piece), playing games with the children, running in the middle of the road, avoiding crowds and wearing my protective gear in the hospital.  We are taking many precautions and are very safe.  Our team would like to thank the many businesses who are donating snacks, it really means a lot to the front line workers.  Our entire team will work 24/7 for our community and regardless of the condition, our PICU providers are here for you day and night.

A spectacular fall day

Here is the view from the Eastside trail looking west towards downtown.  It was an incredible day, clear and cool. The leaves have fallen and Thanksgiving is only a few days away.  The flu has not yet arrived and Randall Children’s is still providing free flu shots for the community.  As the winter becomes more evident, it will become darker with more rain, please dress with reflective material, use lights and be cautious of walkers and bikers.  Our goal is to help prevent injuries and mishaps for our community.

Fall View from the PICU

Fall is here, Here is the view from the PICU at Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon.  The fall colors are here and the weather is absolutely stunning.  Amazingly very little rain for this time of year and October/November can be the best months in Oregon.  I look at this view many times and have seen the tree grow up over the past few years and always exciting to see new seasons.  Have a great fall.  MB

Kick the Flu

The Flu season is almost upon us.  I just recently received my flu shot, I also received some popcorn, juice and a reusable straw.  I am so very happy the flu shot is available, highly effective and easily obtained.  The flu can be deadly, I have seen the deadly effects of the flu and want to thank Legacy for having a flu shot day for the community
